Medical Camp at Dahivali – A Report Print E-mail

It was nearly six months after our Pediatric camp in November 07, and we were still unsure about handling the Gynecology camp requested by the women of Dahivali village.

Every time we visited the village we were greeted by the pleading and forlorn faces of the women. We were a little low on courage as it is a very sensitive issue which would need really careful handling. Finally our determination took over our fears and we decided that something had to be done for them. We decided to ask for advice from various doctors and NGOs.

We finally decided that Sunday 30th March would be a convenient day to hold the camp. Through the encouraging words of Dr. Leena Gangolli, we contacted ‘Sathi’ an NGO in Pune, that works towards educating villages, especially women, and training them in cleanliness and health. They decided to join us and impart information to the village ladies on women’s problems, detecting and handling simple ailments. We requested four Gynecologists from Mumbai who willingly helped out with the clinical part of the camp.

After a quick breakfast of kanda poha, wada pav and tea at Gurushakti, the doctors and ‘Sathi’ volunteers were taken by car to the village. Dahivali school – Balwadi was already abuzz with activity as Parijnan Parivar volunteers were setting up things from early morning on 30th March. A local contractor Pradeep Bhau had arranged for curtains for privacy and tables that acted as examination tables. Surgical gloves, Sterile instruments were all ready. Abhijit Kumtakar and Rajani, working for Glenmark Pharmaceutical helped getting stock of certain medicines from their company and dispensed them according to requirements. The Parivar volunteers helped register each of the 99 women that came for the check up, took their weight and other details and sent them in for examination after which they were requested to go in for the lecture by ‘Sathi’ volunteers. There were free medicines and tonics dispensed after which they were sent home.

The camp lasted from 10 am to 2.30 pm and all went on like clock work. Medicines and drinking water had to be replenished once and was done by Abhijit Kumtakar and Abhishek Balsekar promptly. Some volunteers had prepared a simple hot meal for the exhausted doctors and volunteers after the camp.

We all left the premises of Gurushakti after a little siesta. The doctors and ‘Sathi’ volunteers were given a memento with the Swami Parijnanashram and Devi Durga Parameshwari for their help and efforts rendered during the camp.

Our sincere thanks to Dr. Ramkrishna and Dr. Mrs. Santoshi Prabhu, Dr. Megha Gupta, Dr. A. Nivedita, Dr. Sneha Vaidya, and ‘Sathi’ volunteers – Rashmi, Shakuntala and Trupti . We were really happy to see the happy faces of the women folk in the village and we had just proved to ourselves that nothing is impossible. When ones intentions are good then there is always a divine force that works with you.

Jai Parijnan
